Employee Spotlight: Pasquale Scutifero, Software Engineering Team Supervisor & Cybersecurity Administrator
A Career Built on Learning and Growth
Pasquale Scutifero’s journey into software engineering began with his graduation in Computer Science in Italy in 1996. Following a year in the army, Pasquale embarked on a career in IT, spending 12 years in help desk roles. Despite having zero HVAC experience when he joined T.M. Bier & Associates (TMBA) in 2009, Pasquale’s passion for learning propelled him to master the intricacies of the industry. Starting as a programmer, he gained certifications in HVAC systems, security cameras, and software engineering through TMBA, climbing the ranks to become the Cybersecurity Administrator in 2014. By 2022, he was promoted to Software Engineering Team Supervisor, a role that allows him to oversee a talented team and drive innovation in the company.
Leading the Way in Software Engineering
As the Software Engineering Team Supervisor, Pasquale manages a team of five, ensuring smooth operations, troubleshooting, and quality control for TMBA’s projects. Known for his reliability, Pasquale’s leadership style emphasizes action and precision. “I prefer quality over quantity,” he shares. His team’s programming expertise includes working with Schneider Electric systems and, more recently, Distech controls. Since January 2023, TMBA has integrated Distech as a new offering, with Pasquale leading the charge in mastering its unique programming language and applications.
Driving Innovation Through Technology
Pasquale has been at the forefront of TMBA’s technological evolution, contributing to groundbreaking projects like One Worldwide Plaza in NYC and the upcoming 1285 Avenue of the Americas, a large-scale Distech integration. His team’s work ensures that TMBA delivers quality systems that meet and exceed client expectations. “As software engineers, we are often the last faces the customer sees,” Pasquale notes. “If they’re happy with our work, they’re likely to return to TMBA for future projects.”
Overcoming Challenges
One of Pasquale’s biggest challenges has been mastering new programming languages and systems, such as Distech. He credits his success to a proactive approach, utilizing documentation, tech support, and even AI tools to solve problems. “Learning as you go is my nature,” he says. “Every day is an opportunity to improve and innovate.”
Building a Collaborative and Family-Oriented Team
At TMBA, Pasquale fosters a culture of camaraderie and mutual support. “We’re not numbers; we’re people,” he emphasizes. Collaboration with other departments, like design engineering and project management, ensures successful project outcomes. His dedication to his team’s growth is evident. “The most rewarding part of my job is seeing my team improve every day,” he shares. “One day, they won’t need me to be as hands-on because they’ll be that proficient.”
Looking Ahead
Pasquale is excited about the future of software engineering at TMBA, especially with advancements in AI and smart field controls. From occupancy sensors capable of optimizing room comfort to VR tools for visualizing HVAC equipment, the industry is evolving rapidly. Pasquale is committed to staying ahead of the curve, continually upgrading his knowledge and certifications, including those in SonicWall, Schneider Electric, Microsoft, Distech, Tridium, and CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker).
Personal Insights and Advice
Outside of work, Pasquale enjoys Formula One, cooking, running and traveling. His advice to aspiring software engineers is simple but powerful: “Don’t be lazy. Precision and dedication are essential. Cutting corners has a cost, especially when working on critical systems like hospital HVAC equipment or cooling plants”
A Legacy of Excellence at TMBA
Pasquale’s legacy at TMBA is a testament to his dedication, adaptability, and passion for technology. From modernizing IT systems to upgrading accounting software, implementing ticketing systems, network inventory and security controls, his impact on TMBA’s success is undeniable. “Every day is a new challenge,” he reflects. “That’s what makes this job exciting.”
